Listening to the Community
The Development Team began meeting with members of the Swampscott community in October 2020 to get feedback and ideas on the preliminary concepts for the Elm Place project. These sessions were designed as a listening tour that would eventually lead to final proposal based on local input.
The team met twice with the Swampscott Affordable Housing Trust in October, which voted unanimously to support the project on October 26. A briefing was held with the Swampscott for All Ages Committee in November. Between January 4 and 8, 2021, the team hosted five in-person meetings for abutters and neighbors at the offices of Paradise Construction. A meeting with Swampscott Unites Respects Embraces (SURE) occurred on January 14.
The Swampscott Office of Community Development hosted a community meeting on the preliminary development proposal on January 21 before the Swampscott Select Board expressed its concerns about the preliminary proposal at its public meeting February 3.
Additional individual and small group meetings were held in April, May and early June as the team worked to incorporate community feedback and ideas, where possible, into the changes currently under consideration. The Planning Board held two informal meetings on the proposal in November.
The Development Team is committed to listening to community feedback as part of the comprehensive permit application now before the Swampscott Zoning Board of Appeals.
